August Summary~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

Whether I like it or not, August is usually hot with very little rain  here in North Louisiana .  What started out as the norm, with a very wet mid-point, is ending in it's sunny glory....not entirely for the birds:  in my back garden and down the road a bit.

.....August flew by as did the birds.  Until next time~

Haiku Poetry No. 13 from Marty's Fiber Musings

To my delight, this little bulb pushed up in my back garden yesterday: A pink Rain Lily aka Zephyranthes Minuta

and between its fragile beauty and a very desirable rain, out poured Haiku Poetry No. 13:

     "When will one ever be

          Summertime is hot and dry

      A flower so rare."

And the Winner is... from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

We were thrilled to see so many wonderful flowers listed in our giveaway! It is great to know that so many stitchers out there love flowers as much as we do. Lilies and tulips led the way as the most popular flowers, but there were quite a few that piqued our interest since we hadn't stitched them before. Flowers have been our mainstay to stitch since we began our little business, and we thought it would be fun to show some of the ones that we have stitched—along with a few that are now on our stitching radar ...

What better way to wrap up our revisit In the Garden than with a giveaway? We have been thrilled to see some of the blocks you are creating with these patterns, and are so grateful to those who have shared their progress in our Hopeful Stitchers Facebook Group. It is never too late to join our garden visits. Printed patterns with ribbon are still available, as are digital PDF downloads, and we have shared our original post below, which includes photos of each block.

To celebrate our gardening, we thought we would offer a free pattern set ...

"In the Garden" Again: Wheelbarrow of Flowers from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

We are rapidly nearing an end to our revisit In the Garden. It has been fun for us to study these blocks again, with fond memories of teaching these classes. As things are beginning to open up post-pandemic, we look forward to teaching at shops and guilds again! I (Teri) had such fun stitching this one, as the wheelbarrow is filled with many of my favorite flowers; we hope you enjoy it as well. And remember, the printed pattern with ribbon is 10% off this week, using the promo code WHEELBARROW.

“In the Garden” Again: Garden Gate from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Today, we are taking care of a little housekeeping and letting you know about some changes coming soon. Due to changes in Blogger, our blog can no longer be delivered to your mailbox. Never fear though, you can still read our blog by going directly to it, checking social media, or better yet, sign-up for our newsletter and the blog links will always be included. Because of these changes we are in the midst of re-evaluating the future direction of our blog and its frequency. We will keep you posted as we go forward and hope you will still continue ...

"In the Garden" Again: Hydrangea from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

It has been a long time coming, but I (Kara) am finally stateside! We still don't have all our belongings yet, but all in due time. Since coming back, one of my favorite things has been wandering around my garden to see how it has fared in the last four years. One big surprise was one of my hydrangeas—it is huge! It is just starting to bloom and since it is right outside of our bedroom window, it is the first thing I see when I wake up.

This week's In the Garden block uses a bounty ...

"In the Garden" Again: Hummingbird and Fuchsia from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Spring is waning and summer is near. Porches are bedecked with hanging flower pots brimming with blooms, and among my (Teri's) favorites is the fuchsia. Its colors are so vibrant and the design is magnificently detailed—a perfect companion to our little feathered friend, the hummingbird. You won't believe how fun it is to create these ribbon fuchsias, and they aren't as hard as they look like they'd be—promise! It feels a bit magical when you are gathering these petals.

As before, the printed pattern includes all the ribbon you need to create this block ...

"In the Garden" Again: Dragonfly and Fern from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

I (Kara) had always assumed that dragonflies were mostly found near water, until I was walking in the forest in Germany. There I saw them frequently as I was walking our two furry children, and those glimpses inspired this block. Though this block has only five wool pieces, the embroidery, embellishment, and threads take it from simple to elegant with just a few stitches. We hope you have fun stitching this block and this week only use the coupon code FERN10 for 10% off the printed pattern!

"In the Garden" Again: Robin and Forsythia from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

While I (Kara) was in Germany, the only robins I saw were the smaller English robins. They are adorable, and we have brought them to life in other blocks that we have created. The halfway point of our In the Garden re-visit brings us to the Robin and Forsythia block, but this time our robin is the larger, but equally beautiful American Robin. Simple stitches will bring this robin to life, and he will look like he is ready to fly away!

This week, you can use the coupon code ROBIN10 to receive a 10% discount on the printed Robin ...

"In the Garden" Again: Rose from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Both Kara and I (Teri) have June birthdays, so it is no surprise that we enjoy creating roses. You will see them in many of our designs—in fabric, ribbon, and embroidery. And thus, we knew we would dedicate a block In the Garden to our June flower, the Rose. We layered the petals and accentuated them with stitching and a sprinkle of beaded dewdrops. As you'll see, there are other ways to interpret the pattern. How will your rose bloom?

We love when stitchers make the patterns their own:
one student shared her dimensional rose, created with a ...

We're Back "In the Garden" Again: Cornflowers from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

As Kara stated last week, we will be revisiting our time capsule of posts from a few years ago, and going back In the Garden. We will be using many of the stitches we learned in our Hopeful Flowers Stitch Along, and sharing tips in our Hopeful Stitchers Facebook group. Since this post was first published, the quilt has been assembled, quilted, bound, and taught in two year-long BOMs at Primitive Homespuns. We hope that you will enjoy our return visit In the Garden, and if you have already stitched some of the blocks, perhaps you might share some of ...

I'm Blue ~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

It's not my mood that is blue.....all is well here on the home front - but my latest quilt in blue homespun has gotten me in a very good blue zone.

blue homespun - improvisational quilt top finished by Marty Mason

Having all theses blues on hand, I was inspired by the Sugaridoo quiltalong (the one in which I didn't participate) and the Marston/Jones Free Range Triangle Quilts....particularly page 88 showing free range triangles designed and made by Joanne Salz.

Totally improv triangles with a few 9-patch  and churn dash blocks for variety.  I had to add a few filler strips to get the columns sewn ...

After the Cooking is Done from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

After the crew pulled out on Saturday, I set to putting everything back in order. I sweep every day, but my floor needed a good washing/steaming and I felt better after the stove had been scrubbed. That allowed me to kick back a little on Sunday. DH still saddled up at 7:30 and headed north to look for a sick calf he'd spotted when they were moving some cattle yesterday: Sometimes I fuss to

May 1 and I'm dancing ~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

Yes, doing a Happy Spring dance.  The mirror, mirror quilt top is finished! and I'm rather enjoying the Tula Pink  Tent Stripe in Fern surrounding all those hexagons.  No, it's not in perfect symmetry as the Kathy Doughty pattern might have suggested,  but what counts is that this quilt maker is okay with the out of sync-ness!   The Material Obsession pattern has 10 finished 'mirrors' but life just wouldn't let me take it that far so I gladly stopped at 7 and it's rather a good finish at seventy by seventy...ish.

While out taking the ...

A Winner and a Sale from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

We hope the title got your attention! We would like to thank all of you who shared your stitching projects with us, and for all the kind birthday wishes, as well. With such a strong community of stitching friends, it is easier to feel surrounded than to feel alone, though we may be miles apart. May we continue to create beauty during this time of isolation, being calmed by the needle and thread, and to feel the companionship of our fellow stitchers. And for your friends and family who aren't acquainted with the calming effects of hand stitching, call ...
